Among the discrimination that exists in the US legislation system, one is the issue of unfairly inflated prices on women's menstrual products such as commonly used sanitary pads and tampons. The cost of a regular box of pads or tampons is approximately $7, which has a sales tax of $0.58 (8.25% sales tax), which over the lifetime costs $1773.33.  This means the average woman would spend an estimate of $146.30 on sales tax of these menstrual products. Although one way to avoid this costly option is to use a diva cup, why should we compromise our comfort? It is important that we make our state politicians aware of how important menstrual health is. Feminine hygiene should not be a choice, but it should be an essential right.

In July of 2018, The House passed a bill to recognize such products eligible under the flexible spending accounts or health saving accounts. Congress has yet to enact this legislation. As of now, 35 out of 50 states, including Texas, do not recognize menstrual products as exempt from any sort of sales tax. Unsurprisingly, our state legislators consider sugar-loaded treats like ice cream and cookies as nontaxable. I believe that there are many factors that weigh into this issue, but one is obviously the underrepresentation of women in the lawmaking process. If you are a strong believer in progression and equal rights for all, feel free to sign this petition. Female health should never be compromised!
