Suitcases For Kids started this petition to Senator Ted Cruz and

Lets work together to make it illegal to give foster youth a trash bag for "a suitcase."

I am a former foster youth and failed adoptee who spent on average 12 years in the system. I want to create change so our foster youth today can have better experiences.

Facts: Most foster youth enter the foster care system with nothing but the clothing on their backs. When they travel in between placements they are forced to travel with their belongings in trash bags. This is something I personally experienced and I witnessed countless other youth do the same.

I believe our foster youth deserve better and the system can do better. It has to be recognized as a children's right. Each youth needs to be provided with a suitcase or duffel bag while in states custody. For too long trash bags have been overlooked in foster care normalizing them as suitcases. Allowing our youth to carry every item they own, in what we put our trash in, as if their belongings are trash. As if they are trash! If we want better futures for our foster youth then we need to start here. Providing them with trash bags does absolutely nothing to show them they're important. They're cared for. They're loved and they can have a bright future outside of their past. I believe by making trash bags illegal it will give our foster youth a sense of hope, dignity, and show them that we as community care.

For anyone wondering financially how this can be done? Foster Care is a multi-billion dollar government funded industry. It's time the industry includes this as a necessity. As a Children's right.

I say no to trash bags! Their future is in our hands. Do you agree? If so PLEASE sign this petition and make a stand with me to remove trash bags all together from foster care. Together WE CAN CREATE CHANGE for our foster youth today.
