As parents progress through higher education, they are not properly taught how to make a budget, how to invest and grow their savings, or how to hold illiquid assets. This usually leads to an entire generation lacking the financial literacy needed to sustain long-term wealth. Simmons (2006) also provides a quote on this issue by James Arthur Baldwin, stating that "Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them" (para. 1). This lack of financial literacy has been shown to be prevalent specifically in those higher education students, which further solidifies these statements. According to an article by a professor of social work Gaurav Sinha (2018), a study group consisting of 3050 young adults between 18 and 24 years of age showed that:

More than half of the emerging adults were found to be financially precarious (32%) or financially at-risk (36%) who scored low on several financial attributes and behaviors. (p. 178-185)

The absence of classes on this topic in school is the reason why we are making this petition. Teachers and administrations will finally be able to understand the majority opinion of students. The signatures, whether they are electronic via a link through Instagram or on paper, will serve as concrete evidence that our community demands change. This approach will ensure that the entire community (teachers, admin, students, parents) will work together to bring change, using their conflicting views to agree on a final, cohesive decision.
