Maggie Stearns started this petition to Teachers and

CSD is continuing its efforts to bring students to in person classes, despite the rise of Covid-19 cases. This creates an unsafe environment for students, teachers, and staff. Please sign this petition to halt this return.

First, Covid-19 cases are rising exponentially, creating an unsafe environment for students. Just yesterday, more than 5144 Covid 19 cases were recorded. This is only an addition to the 673,000 recorded cases in the United States. This does not account for the people who have gone untested due to access to transportation, child care, and nearby covid testing. By returning to in-person learning, we are following in the footsteps of districts that have failed, and hurt students in the process. An example showing the catastrophe we will be facing is from Cherokee county. Over One Thousand-Two Hundred students tested positive for covid 19 after returning to in-person learning. In August, when this event occurred, Covid cases were increasing by a thousand a day. Now, the cases have increased by 500%. There is no doubt that we would face even worse effects than Cherokee has.

Next, the official City Schools of Decatur student/parent handbook states "Our mission is to...supported by highly qualified, caring adults in a safe, supportive, and inviting environment." By opening schools, the district is breaching this mission in the handbook. CSD is a highly respected district, with a large reputation. When we make uneducated decisions, we become tarnished as an exemplary school district. In order to keep our high standards, we urge you to stop all in-person returns.

We must prioritize the opinions of students, teachers, and staff. Most students I have interacted with have stated that they are not inclined to return, and think it is irresponsible. This opinion can also be seen among most teachers, whose opinions you have overlooked throughout this pandemic. Instead of these higherups who only step foot in our school once a year, you should be prioritizing the affected community.

Almost every room in every school is far too small to properly socially distance. Before the pandemic, we were struggling to fit the needed amount of desks in a classroom, which meant we were seated abnormally close to one another. Our spaces are simply not made to occupy students during a pandemic. On top of that, the plastic shields currently placed in classrooms are ineffective. They would reach chest level on an average student, that is with books stacked under in of course. Also, who decided that a single roll of paper towels will stop Covid 19 from entering our classrooms. This statement also includes the fact that we are already extremely understaffed.
