Racism stems from ignorance. How do we combat ignorance? Education. Knowledge. For centuries, America has systematically oppressed people of color, African Americans in particular. Over the past 100 years, legislation has been passed and programs have been created to uplift and support the black community but the roots of racism have not been acknowledged. Despite the inclusion of Black, Native American, Asian, and Latinx history in today’s curriculum, the white narrative still dominates the pedagogy.

Franklin High School (in Somerset NJ) currently offers a course called “Race, Gender, and Equity” to its 11th and 12th grade students as an elective in addition to 3 years of required history courses. While it is great that this class is available to the students, this is not enough. “Race, Gender, and Equity” should be a requirement for graduation. Gym is required all 4 years because the school system claims to value students’ health as much as their academic success. “Personal Finance” is considered mandatory because students need economic proficiency to survive. Well we can’t survive in a world where hate drives people to murder in the name of racism.

It is time that we as a society start being proactive rather than reactive. It is not enough to be against racial prejudice and discrimination. We must train all teachers and administrators to be vocally anti-racist and anti-bias. Education has the power to influence minds which means it has the power to change hearts. Please sign this petition so we can start to educate our youth on how to thrive in and love their multicultural society.
