Please sign this petition to support the MUSD elementary hybrid model that was presented by the district on February 25th. The model was developed by a task force of administrators, teachers, and parents and represents a compromise that would serve all students—both the ones choosing to attend school in-person and the ones staying with 100% distance learning. In this model, all students start with remote learning in the mornings with students going to campus in the afternoons for in-person instruction with their teachers. There would be two cohorts of in-person students. Each cohort would be in-person for two hours a day, two days a week. In this model, all students receive live instruction with their teachers every day.

On March 2nd, the MUSD Board of Education proposed a new model of two full days of in-person learning on campus for each cohort of students. With two cohorts, this means teachers would teach in-person students all day four days a week. For four days each week, only the students on campus will receive live instruction with their teachers. Students who choose 100% distance learning as well as students who choose hybrid WILL NOT receive live instruction on days they are at home.

Furthermore, this new model exposes students to higher health risks as they will be asked to keep their masks on and keep a proper distance for an entire day instead of a couple hours. It will also be difficult to manage lunch period when the students need to take their masks off for a prolonged period of time while eating.

We urge the Board of Education to reconsider and adopt the hybrid model that is developed by the task force. This will allow ALL students, whether they are "hybrid" or "100% distance learning", to receive live instructions from teachers five days a week. It will also allow teachers to spend more time and energy on teaching our children instead of enforcing rules on masks and social distancing.

We also urge the Board of Education to help schools to come up with a plan to allow more supervised learning opportunities on campus, in order to accommodate parents who need to have their children on campus all day. An example of that would be supervised study groups that will allow students to attend their Zoom classes on campus in the mornings. This could potentially allow more in-person time for students without neglecting the needs of students who are distance learning.
