Adult life skills should be taught within the classroom to provide student information on how to prepare for the future. There are many curriculums and different courses available in our high school but not one single course available for basic adult life skills. One might say that it is not the teachers that should do the teaching but rather the parents should teach their own children. This we understand, but it should be the schools job to prepare us for adulthood, and this is one huge piece needed to help young adults get adjusted to adult life and responsibilities.

Have you ever applied for a job? Every application will ask for a resume. You stare at the portion of the application in confusion because what in the world is a resume? Most high schoolers don’t even know what that is or even know how to produce one and because you are now considered an adult, you end up looking for examples and end up with a generic one. One important factor you forgot to notice is that, most young adults applying for that very same position don’t even know how to create their own resume. After you get past that step, it doesn’t mean you’re done. You are still pursuing to get an interview and according to “careers.workopolis.com”, they state that only 2% of applicants actually get an interview because their resume is eye catching and stand out the most.

One of the most important topics most school never teach is how to handle money, using credit cards, student loans and how to do your taxes. More than every, the youth has gotten access to debt cards compared to previous years. We are reckless users and will most likely spend all of our money. If we have had someone guiding us, and sharing experience and recommendations, we would have know how to better manage our money and save it for future necessities. Learning to establish and balance money and having great credit score is crucial when renting a home, getting a car and being eligible for getting a loan. This should be taught throughout all schools to allow students to have a hands on experiences and knowledge in order to succeed in life. Generally, tax professionals charge more than $100 to prepare even the simplest federal returns. If we understand and know how to do our own taxes, imagine how much money you can save yearly.

Schools will teach students unnecessary studies such as physical education, memorizing the periodic table, some math classes and extracurricular activities offered in school that won’t help us reach our future career. If students were given the opportunity of learning how to do your taxes of knowing which student loans to apply for can help you keep out of debt. Becoming a reckless credit card holder can lead to getting into huge debit, the IRS can come and collect your goods, bad credit score and much more serious consequences. School has such high demands and requirements of taking unnecessary classes that we will never use in our future life, but if we get the opportunity to have a adult skill class you will be surprise in how many students will acknowledge the class and take the course to help themselves and others around them.
