Remove plastic carrier bags and plastic from fruit and veg stalls by mid 2022
Super markets have made their 5 year commitments to reduce their plastic waste but why do we need 5 years to cease the sale of plastic carrier bags and all plastic packaging in fruit, veg and even meat or deli counters.
The human race adapts very well to change even when it is initially unwanted. The mandating of seat belts has saved hundreds of thousands of lives, though during its introduction was heavily criticised as being an inconvenience or "health and safety gone mad".
As with plastic waste, we have come to accept the way we receive our produce. Not only does this take up unnecessary room in our fridges and recycle bins, plastic packaging is having a devostating impact on our natural world.
The global pandemic has shown what businesses of all sizes are capable of achieving when the stakes are high, there was no time for 5 year commitments the changes were necessary and had be implemented immediately. The destruction of our planet must be viewed with the same level of urgency.
We must act now, for the benefit of ourselves and our future. Cease the sale of plastic carrier bags & fruit/veg bags by the end of 2021, and cease supplying all fruit and veg in plastic containers by mid 2022.
