Let’s Stop Taxing Food & Medicine for good.

The current Illinois budget calls for a temporary suspension of the state sales tax on groceries through June 30, 2023.

 We, the residents of Illnois, don’t think that is good enough. 

“Life’s essentials” should never have been taxed in the first place.

Illinois is one of only 13 states that impose sales tax on groceries. Illinois is also the one and only state that taxes prescription drugs at the state level.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, being residents of Illinois who have affixed our signatures to this Petition, hereby Petition the Illinois State Legislature and the Governor of Illinois to permanently eliminate the state sales tax and, in addition, enact legislation to prohibit ALL local sales taxes on:

1. Basic foods such as bread, milk, cheese, baby food and formula, fresh meats, poultry, non-gourmet seafood, fish, fruits, nuts, vegetables, and other natural foods.
2. All prescription drugs and non-prescription pain relievers such as aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen, cough suppressants, antihistamines, antacids, laxatives, and diarrhea remedies.
3. Medical Appliances such as, but not limited to, crutches or canes, wheelchairs, walkers, and braces.
