Knutsford Heath is under threat. Our beautiful open green space is registered common land, used and enjoyed by hundreds of people daily. It fronts the historic Gaskell Avenue where the writer Elizabeth Gaskell spent her childhood. It is in a Conservation Area. The proposed Christmas market with 100 wooden chalets selling alcohol, hot food and retail goods, together with Christmas Trees and a Santa's Teepee is a wholly inappropriate use of the Heath. Up to 1000 cars may park on our precious Heathland, for six long weeks, seven days a week, turning it to mud. The grass will not regenerate until the Spring. We don't want our Heath ruined. We don't want market traders on it for almost two months and neither do the majority of Knutsford's permanent retailers. We want to continue to use our Heath as is our right as commoners of the land. All the public are free to roam across it, play games on it, and enjoy the open landscape. It should not be blighted by an enormous swathe of wooden retail cabins and cars. It is not an event space. We don't want our rural town clogged up with traffic congestion. Knutsford already has a two-day Christmas market, held on hard surface along the main shopping street. We have a fantastic lights switch on ceremony, complete with reindeer. We enjoy Christmas. The proposed market is bigger and longer than the Christmas markets of cities like Chester or Leeds. Only 4% of land in England is registered Common Land and everyone has the right to use and enjoy it. It is precious. We urge you not to deny us our wonderful, green, open space. This Christmas market is inappropriate in this location and on this scale.
