Tony Evangelista started this petition to Tarrytown Hall Care Center

Tarrytown Hall Care Center has a policy of not letting residents have their power wheelchairs. My power wheelchair is custom-made for my body, the back, the seat cushion, the head rest, foot rests, and the legs are all measured and calibrated for my body's comfort and safety.
It reclines and tilts to different degrees. Both of these functions are crucial in keeping my posture at a safe level. My chair is not only something I sit in, but is an extension, a part of me.
I am a 60-year-old quadriplegic man who operates the chair with a chin control, since I'm unable to use my fingers and hands. But, I disconnect that part of the chair, making it a power-less wheelchair.
They are denying me the use of my own specifically designed wheelchair.
The summer, which I treasure, has slipped away. I would have been able to go home each weekend and spend a simple summer day with my family under the sun, but because they don't allow my wheelchair, that simple joy that anyone takes for granted, has been stripped away from me. I couldn't go to any outing or other event either. Bear in mind, I would have my son rent a U-Haul truck with the ramp to transport my chair here. We did it twice so far. I had it brought here so I could enjoy Father's Day at my brothers house and then they demanded in an ultimatum that I must return my wheelchair or find another nursing home that allows power wheelchairs.
They tried to compensate me by fitting me with a standard, nonpower wheelchair. This took weeks to put together and I am not comfortable in it at all. My body is not secure in it, I slide even when I'm motionless. Even when I travel in my own chair in a paratransit bus I shift a little, I don't trust their chair's safety. They modified the head rest, but it is too confining, and Ugly. The back does not hug me like mine does and the legs/feet are not comfortable. Even when it's reclined or tilted somewhat, it's not comfortable or feel safe.
Now my son's wedding is coming up in early September. I want to attend it in my wheelchair along with any other outings or appointments.
If and when I do go on appointments to doctors or other places, they'd rather me go travel in an ambulance, with 2 EMS drivers and sit on an uncomfortable stretcher.
I ask you, how undignified and cumbersome is that?
I have appealed to them many times about this issue, but they're sticking to their policy of not allowing residents to have their power wheelchairs, even if the power function is disconnected.
Please help me overturn this policy. It is an injustice and lessons the quality of life.
