Hello, my name is Natalie Plauche. I am 15 years old and currently attending Chisholm Trail High school as a freshman. After a conversation with a friend, he said most schools do not have a class on developing the skills need to know how to pay taxes or buying a house. After speaking with my parents, I found that they had difficulty understanding how to navigate their taxes when they became adults. Budgeting has been hard for them.
They both work extremely hard and have great careers, but they’re not as financially stable as they like. My mom has been working hard over the last several years to budget, save, invest and most importantly, pay off debt.
She worked hard from nothing to provide us a better life, solely because she didn’t know fundamental financial planning, budgeting, what influenced her credit, and essential financial comprehension. She was taken advantage of and continues to pay for it today.
My step-sister had a similar issue after graduating high school.
She was not taught how to assimilate, only how to memorize. She did not learn how to be financially independent or self-sufficient, and after only one semester in community college, away from home, she dropped out and moved back in with her mom and has struggled with how to adult since. I want to change this. I don’t want others to suffer from a lack of experience and knowledge in something fundamental and essential. I want high schools to have a mandatory class focused on building the skill-set and financial conception needed to know how to be more successful during life and manage to live as an adult. The course would have topics like learning how to handle taxes and how to keep yourself out of debt. It would need to include information to understand bank and savings accounts, investments, credit scores, and interest rates. It would have a broad spectrum of things to teach, not just about money management. Learning how to study so that one is understanding information with the use of retrieval practice, not just memorization, would be very beneficial as well. That would involve students practicing the information being instructed by following memorization can remember the data being instructed. The course would teach several topics to help students understand functioning as adults, being more beneficial students, and being more successful in business and life.
