My name is Martha Bajana. When I was 10 years old I was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, in order for me to move I use a wheel chair. I have never allowed my physical ailment handicap my life. I have been an employee of Target in College Point, NY for six-years and, until recently, they have helped me with my disability.
When I was hired Target understood that I needed a ride to work from my family members who also work at the same store. In January Target informed me in I was violating a company policy which says family members cannot work at the same store if one of them is in management. Although I am not management, Target told me I needed to transfer to another store or take a demotion to remain at my store.
The only way I can get to work is through my family members, who also work at the store, making a transfer impossible. The demotion they are forcing on me not only comes with a cut of hours, but also requires lots of physical labor that Target obviously knows I cannot complete due to my handicap.
As a single mother, I struggle to make ends meet. Target has put me in a very difficult position. They have strictly informed all of my coworkers not to help me in any way while on or off the clock, telling them that it was unlawful to help me to go to the restroom! They have also ordered that I go on New York Disability Leave.
Handicapped people have rights too. They deserve to be treated fairly and not discriminated upon. I have a right to work and I want to work! For six-years Target has had no issue with me until now. Please sign the petition and tell Target to stop discriminating against me and give me my job back!
