For over 20 years, child slavery in West Africa has continued to grow in the cocoa industry. Hershey, Mars, and Nestle have made empty promises and have come up short year after year. The chocolate companies have made it clear; they will not change unless sufficient pressure and attention are brought to confront this issue.

These chocolate producers can increase transparency within their supply chain but fail to do so because they put profits ahead of people. They are profiting from the chaos in West Africa. Not only is this a human rights violation but also an environmental one as well. Environmentalists have highlighted the scale of deforestation to make the world's chocolate in recent years. Ivory Coast alone has lost more than 80 percent of its forests in the last 50 years, mainly to cocoa production.

We call on Target Corporation to differentiate itself from the competition. Dump the unethical, budget chocolate makers, and promote chocolate companies that only use only ethically grown cocoa. This bold move will set Target Corp. apart and bring attention to the movement to eradicate the worst forms of child labor, including slavery and the disappearing rainforests. We encourage all consumers to make the same commitment and change your chocolate products' sourcing to fair trade providers. We need to participate together to bring change effectively.
