Nathan Matthews started this petition to Target Australia and

Its time to put a ban on junk mail!

Let's join together and stop this wasteful and outdated system. With our current technology, why are we still wasting our precious earth's resources on printing these one-time use catalogues, when we can receive the same catalogue in an online version via email, or by one of the many catalogue apps available on our smart devices. And for those without access to these sources, let's make paper catalogues only available for pickup in your local store.

It's estimated that, in Australia alone, 240,000 tonnes of paper is used solely for junk mail every year. That 5,760,000 trees! And what is the saddest part, is of this 240,000 tones of junk mail it is estimated that only 20% gets read. That's 4,608,000 trees getting cut down for absolutely no reason each year.

It's not only the trees that are impacted, the entire process contributes massively to global warming, with over 21 billion liters of water used in the process, enough to fill 8,646 Olympic size swimming pools, and over 1 billion kilowatt-hours of energy, that's enough energy to power 100,000 Australian households for the entire year.

And that's not even including the harmful chemicals printed on the paper, vehicle emissions, landfill, recycling facility usage, plastics use and so much more.

With our current climate crisis, we can not allow for this wasteful tradition to go on any longer! Its time to take action and demand a full ban of junk mail!

Let's get our voices heard and tell these big companies and Sussan Ley (Minister for the Environment) that we have had enough of this junk!
