Declare Weetangera, ACT a Cat Containment Suburb

This petition is for a proposal to make Weetangera, ACT, and the surrounding areas a cat containment suburb.

Many cat containment suburbs already exist within the ACT and there is no reason why well-established areas such as Weetangera can’t also be declared cat containment areas.

Under the Domestic Animals Act 2000, cat containment areas are declared if there is a serious nature conservation threat as a result of cat activities. My reasoning for petitioning for Weetangera to become a cat containment suburb is because Weetangera is a well-established area situated near The Pinnacle Nature Reserve (an area set up to protect native wildlife), as well as having lots of trees that native wildlife and birds have made their home. As an ACT study found, domestic cats are responsible for killing a total of 67 different specifies of birds and animals 1, and so the close proximity of the suburb to the nature reserve poses a serious conservation threat for the native wildlife living in the area.

In a 2011 report that was developed by the ACT Government and in collaboration with the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre, the Australian National University, and the RSPCA, it was highlighted that while roaming cats are not a significant concern for residents, residents outside cat containment suburbs such as Forde and Bonner are 5 times more likely to have experienced a cat related problem, compared to those living in cat containment suburbs. 2

This drop in problems surrounding native wildlife and flora and fauna is quite substantial, and with moderate to high level community support for mandatory cat containment across the ACT, there is really no excuse for not declaring more suburbs – especially those situated near nature reserves – cat containment areas.

I implore you to sign the petition in order to change legislation in this district and in declare Weetangera and the surrounding suburbs a cat containment area, protecting the native bird and wildlife population that reside there.
