The Taos County Commissioners, on May 14th, stepped up to the plate and voted 4-0 on both issues before them, denying Family Dollar a Special Use Permit and a Parking Variance, essentially preventing them from building a store next to Orlando's New Mexican Restaurant in historic, semi-rural El Prado, a village adjacent to Taos, NM. More than 150 people packed the Commissioners' chambers preventing another 50 or so in the lobby from getting in the room. About 25-30 people testified over a 2 1/2 hour period; no one spoke for the project. The Commissioners listened attentively as local resident after local resident stepped up to the podium to tell them why a Family Dollar in that location would be a very bad idea.
This is a momentarily sweet victory to savor. The local Family Dollar representative has threatened to take the matter to District Court or choose another site nearby or both. As we await further developments, please stay vigilant and let us know if you hear something about their plans that we don't. We will communicate any developments we know about. In the meantime, rejoice in the part you played, signing the online petition or coming to the hearing, both essential pieces to obtaining this victory.
Other communities around the country should take heart as they battle Family Dollar. You have shown them that it is possible to deny them
