Fairness creams for women sell like hot cakes in India and represent the stench of misogyny that plagues the country. These products are widely advertised with messaging that unashamedly assert dark-skinned as unattractive. Their storylines typically involve a troubled dark-skinned woman unable to get a job or a suitable husband.
These ads are not only justifying discrimination but fuelling an age-old perception that dark-skinned people are in a way “inferior”. This nature of messaging is exploitative and extremely detrimental to young women’s self-esteem, and keeps women from living a life on their own terms.
This petition aims to boycott such misogynistic products and their advertisements and provide people a platform to condemn the corporate greed that encourage India’s fairness fixation.
Our campaign Color of Substance aims to do away with this fixation and get the country to embrace its natural skin type. Let’s take a pledge to look beneath the surface and focus not on the color of the skin, but on #ColorOfSubstance.
