Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin,

Senior Minister of Defence, Dato’ Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob

Minister of Higher Education, Dato Dr Noraini binti Ahmad

Minister of Health, Dato Dr Adham Baba

Director-General of Health, Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham bin Abdullah

There has been a horrifying increase of 9 new clusters in Malaysia, and approximately 22 thousand of active cases as per 2/1/2021. According to this trend, there is a possibility of national healthcare system breakdown due to insufficient hospital beds as well as the supply of personal protective equipment to the frontliners.

And yes, we witnessed over 3000 recoveries on 2 January but how sure are we that the recovery will increase today and tomorrow, and the most importantly, how sure that we can affirm the recovery will decrease today, tomorrow until 3 digits, or 2 digits.

The health authority, despite local and international, has suggested that we should tighten our health security network in order to protect ourselves, and yet, I cannot believe that there is still some demand for massive gatherings, which is quite against the will of our health frontliners.

News on 31 December 2020 shows our police authority has chased away the massive gathering of people at Bukit Bintang even though they are in open space, the police also ask Uniqlo to stop operating its first standalone roadside store at Damansara after their launching day because of worrying for potential clusters. How sure are we, for a close door graduation ceremony?

So, we ask UCSI University to act in a rational manner, to postpone the convocation ceremony at the end of January 2021.

Every graduates are happy to attend convocation, it is undeniable that it is definitely the most happiest and remarkable moment for all of us after finishing several years of tertiary education, however we graduates do understand the difficulty of the current situation, and as a responsible Malaysian, student, son and daughter of our parent and family, I do understand that if we agree for a mass gathering, it will definitely bring opportunity and chances to build another potential pandemic cluster in Malaysia.

I don’t recall any tertiary education institution agreeing to have a physical graduation ceremony, as far as I am concerned, some of the institutions have either conducted a virtual graduation ceremony, or postponed until further notice.

My thought, I hope that I have a similar thought with the undersigned, that we graduates, although we wish to have a complete memory of Uni-life by having a convocation, but we are not selfish to only look into that, we are responsible enough and understanding that it is not a correct moment to have a ceremony.

Therefore we are here to urge the Majlis Keselamatan Negara, and Ministry of Health, as well as Higher Education to engage with UCSI management as the fastest speed, to postpone or stop this convocation, until the pandemic situation in Malaysia is allowing us to do so.

A concerning fresh graduates from UCSI
