Abha Chatterjee started this petition to Tan Dhesi (Member of parliament for Slough) and
  • Much of the waste that goes into our black bins is food waste, including things such as: eggshells, the outer skin of fruits and vegetables, rotten food, leftovers, etc....
  • This waste could easily be composted and turned into nutrient-rich soil which facilitates the growth of plants, instead, it is sent away to be dumped in a landfill, where it is broken down anaerobically.
  • This process results in biogas (a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide) being released directly into the atmosphere, resulting in an increase in the greenhouse effect.
  • If the food waste is sent to an anaerobic digester, it will be broken down in the same way, however, the biogas produced could serve a far more useful purpose, as a source of renewable energy.
  • Although it may be somewhat expensive, it will eventually be able to pay for itself, as the compost can be sold to farms, resulting in better yields and a consequent increase in food security. We must also keep in mind that (according to the UN) we have only 11 years to prevent irreversible damage to the environment, so, realistically, it should be our priority.
  • Overall, introducing a food waste recycling program and implementing compost bins across Slough will greatly reduce our landfill and greenhouse contribution, which will help preserve our beautiful Earth for future generations.
