Whitewater Middle School Parents were notified of Asbestos removal during regular school hours with students attending in session on November 2nd, 2017. This notice was given one day AFTER the removal occurred, which prevented parents from bringing concerns about the contracted time of removal and from preventing students from attending school during this time. Upon investigation, it was learned that Asbestos can be removed during class sessions.
This petition is to further legislation which protects parents and students rights regarding exposure to toxic substances like Asbestos.
This petition holds that:
1) Asbestos removal MUST be conducted at the time which poses the LEAST risk to students during summer, or winter breaks (time permitting) for all lower schools, middle schools and high schools having a regular spring, winter, fall calendar. IF time does not permit schools MUST provide parents with educational alternatives (home tutor, virtual coursework, make-up work, or other suitable option) for students and parents who are concerned about asbestos exposure during abatement.
2) Parents must be notified in writing, and by automated phone VRU (if regularly utilized by the district) at least a month prior to abatement with explanation of when abatement is to occur, whom will conduct the abatement, and who the third party air quality tester will be.
