  • Water tankers or lorries are a common sight in Chennai for decades but few years now these tankers have been transporting sewage water in Old Mahabalipuram Road on a daily basis. Some of these sewage tankers head straight through the narrow lanes near Navalur,Khazhipatur and Padur villages to dump the untreated sewage into the beautiful backwaters of Muttukadu. These backwaters are a backyard to several schools and hundreds of residential communities , hotels, restaurants and IT companies. It’s a lifeline to a vast ecosystem which is diminishing just like the Pallikaranai marsh.
Muttukadu has a boat house which is a popular tourist attraction and the visitors will be Jet skiing through drainage slush. And let’s not forget the proposed floating restaurant on these same waters.
  • Many residents, especially the people that lived here in these villages all their lives depend on the groundwater from the surrounding lakes. The natural water is getting contaminated, the air we breathe is so thick of this stench that we can literally taste it in our mouth. Do I have to mention how this will bring in diseases carrying mosquitoes and flies.

The lorry owners are trying to cut down the cost and time to drive to Sholinganallur Treatment plant and also avoid paying at the plant. All we request you is to divert these lorries to the treatment plants in Sholinganallur, Perungudi or Nesapakkam and not illegally dump into our own backyards.
