Petition to Name Tallassee High School Softball Field to J. Hinson Field

Coach Jacqueline Hinson began her career at Tallassee City Schools in 1985. She was an integral part of establishing and growing Girls Sports for our community. She not only coached Softball but Volleyball and Basketball as well as Track and Field. She loved Tallassee and has always fought to represent her players in a world where funding was lacking, and support was hard to find. As a coach, her tough love approach pushed her players to be better people and players, on and off the field, to learn from their losses, to be independent and resilient, and to always give their best. She was an inspiring coach and mentor to hundreds of young women throughout her tenure at Tallassee City Schools.

In 1986, Coach J. Hinson coached the first girls’ softball season for Tallassee High School. Softball was a huge success, boasting a ranking in the state’s “Elite 8” during 6 of her first 10 years coaching.  She spent many, many, hours of her life at the East Tallassee Softball Complex, where the school hosted its games and practices.  While selflessly giving so much of herself to keep the girls softball program running and expanding, all while sacrificing time with her own two children who became dugout babies, growing up on the red dirt, right alongside the team.

These players were grateful to have the chance to represent their school, even while wearing hand-me down baseball uniforms.  You’ll remember that all of this happened during a time when funding was scarce for girls’ sports teams.  That didn’t stop Coach J Hinson from dreaming.  She had a vision. A vision of an actual field the girls could call their own, where future players could practice, play, celebrate homeruns and have that home field advantage for generations of girls to come. With these dreams, she began to seek support from parents and the community.  After several controversial denials, she finally got approval to use the empty lot behind Southside for the field and began fundraising to get it built.  The players sold suckers at football games, sold 10 pound bags of onions and found sponsors!  She pulled all resources from family, friends, and players. The actual sod for the outfield was donated and in the spring of 1999 the team placed it piece by piece on the field after school. The players sifted out the rocks and carried them away to ensure an infield could be created and safe; many of the parents also came together to construct the announcer’s box and dugouts.  Coach Hinson tediously watered, mowed and drug the field daily to make her vision a reality.  A field that in 2021 is used by players representing Tallassee as the Area Champs and are ranked 2nd in the state!   With the best tools and resources come great opportunity, and the players today are reaping the benefits and representing Tallassee so well!

Nearly 25 years after those first pieces of sod were laid, her vision has truly come full circle. To honor her hard work and dedication to this program, we petition, on behalf of nearly one hundred players and their families, to recognize her through a field dedication.  She was the heart of the creation of Tallassee Softball and she fought to make sure her players and all those to come, had what they needed to be able to PLAY BALL!!  We want to dedicate the field we built, the program she began, and the legacy of Tiger Pride, to her, Coach Jacqueline Hinson.  This dedication serves as a reminder to us, and to the community of our past and the persistent hard work of Coach Hinson that built this program.
