Why this petition matters

Started by Jennifer Dougherty

As interest in print media wanes, more and more Americans are getting their news and information from cable news outlets. Unfortunately, CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News offer very little news--meaning facts or objective journalism. Instead, they concentrate mostly on opinion shows. That means millions of Americans who think they are getting important news are really getting the opinions of the anchors and pundits and many do not even realize. The sometimes extreme views on these channels are also contributing to a divisive atmosphere in the country which is so harmful for communication and community and keeps us from moving forward together. It should be made clear to viewers that what they are watching is entertainment and editorial, not news. It is important for this distinction to be made so that viewers can seek out other sources for news if necessary and so they don't take the opinions and editorials on most shows as fact. 24-hour cable news stations should not be able to use the word news in their name and must disclose during every program (possibly after commercial breaks as well) whether the show is news or opinion. This shouldn't hurt the cable news media's bottom line or viewership and would do the public a great service.
