Obesity is a growing problem in our nation and is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke - let's take one of the biggest contributors to obesity out of Colorado schools.

We believe every child deserves a healthy lunch free from trans-fats that are proven to increase risk for obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. The American Heart Association wants people to reduce their consumption of these harmful trans-fats and is supporting efforts to remove trans-fats from all school meals in Colorado. By taking trans-fats out of school cafeterias, we can provide healthier meals for our students. Many children don’t have options when it comes to eating lunch at school and are dependent on what the school serves.

The problem is that trans-fats contain no nutritional value and raise your bad cholesterol levels while they lower your good cholesterol. The good news is that trans-fats can be easily replaced by other fats without affecting the taste or flavor. That’s right, trans-fats don’t add any taste or flavor to foods, they just add an increased risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Right now, there is legislation in the Colorado Legislature that would take out trans-fats from all school meals and vending machines. Sign this petition and fight for a healthier generation.

Letter to
Colorado State House
I encourage you to consider legislation that will improve school meals in Colorado and make our students healthier. SB 68 would do that by simply removing trans-fats from all school meals.

Obesity is one of the leading causes of heart disease and stroke, but it is also one of the most preventable. By taking steps to reduce consumption of harmful trans-fats we can reduce our risk of obesity, heart disease and other chronic health problems. I believe all our students deserve school meals that are nutritious and free from trans-fats.

Trans-fats have no nutritional value and actually raise "bad cholesterol" while they lower "good cholesterol". Trans fats don't improve the taste of the food or increase the flavor, they just increase your risk of obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Taking these harmful fats out of school cafeterias would improve the health of our students who eat school provided meals. And as you know healthier kids are more alert and attentive in the classroom.

This is one easy step we can take to curb childhood obesity rates and create a healthier generation. I encourage you to support this measure when it comes before you. Thank you for your consideration.
