Dear Sirs ,

The GOM notification no. TPB – 4316/1340/CR-97/03/UD-11 of 05th October 2016 proposes to change the land use in sector 60, Nerul ‘No Development Zone to Residential and Golf Course.’ This has shocked the citizens of Mumbai / Navi Mumbai. The notification has been added as additional prayer to PIL 218/2013 before Mumbai high Court. The area is rich in biodiversity, has reserved mangrove forests and is the habitat of many bird species including migratory birds like flamingos. Its biodiversity / marine life has been studied by Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and TERI who have issued various reports recommending that the area’s biodiversity be preserved.

The matter has been put on hearing on 21st November 2017. In the meantime the mangroves and wetlands are not to be disturbed.

We were surprised that CIDCO proposes to build a Golf Course when it has recently built one in Kharghar just over 10 kms away. CIDCO, as a responsible Planning Body, should preserve the green lungs of the city and ensure residential buildings are not built in area which is a habitat birds and has protected mangroves.

However even though the notification is subject matter of  court hearing , the project proponent has started construction activity  in Sector 60 involving destruction of mangroves , trees and debris dumping in wetlands which is an offence under The  Environment Protection Act 1986.

Please punish the culprits and stop construction and take back the notification for change in land use.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully,

Sunil Agarwal
