Espanola, NM: Davis the pit bull puppy was shot in January of 2012. The dog was shot in his back leaving him paralyzed. A report was never filed on for the incident. The owner had taken him to a local veterinarian where they determined that he was in a great deal of pain and his back legs were paralyzed. Although paralyzed, he still had sensation in his legs. The owner was informed that euthanasia was the humane approach to give Davis relief from his painful condition. The owner requested a little more time with the dog and left the clinic with painkillers and was to return with Davis a couple of days later. It is reported that neighbors had called to report a dog in horrible conditions during that time.
Little Davis was brought to the shelter in May 18, 2012. During the time between January and May, Davis had dragged his paralyzed legs to nubs and licked off the remaining flesh. Davis endured 5 months in a pain and anguish with a condition not having any help or pain relief as he continued to drag his lifeless legs behind him. The shelter worker said that when asked why she didn't euthanize her dog at the time, she said that she believed in miracles and she had that faith and wanted the dog to recover. At the shelter, because Davis was in such an extreme condition, he was given painkillers, love and affection and the life ending injection that would forever ease his pain.
Dog Times reports that “Rio Arriba County in New Mexico, an ACO has authority to round up stray dogs and cats. But has no power to fine or even cite residents, let alone remove an animal from a home, no matter how appalling the situation. In order for an animal to be seized by reason of cruelty or neglect, a warrant from the sheriff’s office must be obtained”. Dog Times also reports that “in her years as Outreach Director for the Espanola shelter, Nina Stively has never known Animal Control or the Sheriff’s office — either separately or in cooperation — to seize an animal in jeopardy. Cruelty victims are only identified when found as strays or when their owners surrender them”.
This is a case of extreme cruelty to animals. Although the owner did not cause David’s paralysis, she did contribute to his neglect by allowing Davis to suffer for 5 painful months to the point he chewed his legs off. The owner should be charged with animal cruelty. There is another dog living with this owner.
An investigation should be initiated to evaluate the actions, or lack of actions, by officers after receiving the calls of an abused dog.
Changes need to happen to local ordinances to empower Animal Control officers to take action where in abuse cases such as this.
Take action so other animals won't be left to suffer like Davis and improve Animal Protection in Rio Arriba County!
Thank you to Dog Times and the Espanola Shelter for bringing attention and information to the plight of this sweet dog that did not deserve a life like he had.
RIP sweet Davis.
