Access to Medicine for NCDs

In low- and middle-income countries, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent a significant barrier to social and economic development. The stakes are high. If NCDs stay on their upward trajectory, the world will lose a total of $47 trillion in output between 2011 and 2030. The surest way to overcome poverty is to invest in health.
But, funding for measures that prevent and manage these conditions lags dangerously behind the scope of the problem. At the current pace of funding, over half of countries in the world will fail to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to reduce the mortality rate from NCDs by one third. Millions of lives will be lost because of the collective failure of governments to deliver on their commitments to prevent and control NCDs.
Unless we trade inertia for momentum and act now. The WHO’s Global Action Plan has set a target for 80% availability of essential medicines and technologies for NCDs by 2025. We’re calling on the U.S. Mission to the UN to take a leadership role in reaching this global target—by coordinating and financing practical solutions that increase access to essential medicines and products.
But, for any headway to be made on closing the access gap, governments must first work together to close the financing gap. We’re asking our UN delegation to coordinate with governments, inter-governmental organizations, institutions, and the private sector to commit the necessary funding for essential NCD medicines and products. Financing is urgently needed to integrate NCD management into universal health coverage initiatives and existing health infrastructure.
NCDs affect every area of human progress—from our personal health to our economic stability. If global policymakers are truly committed to achieving the sustainable development goals, non-communicable diseases cannot continue to be ignored. We demand that our leaders put funding and resources behind their words to combat NCDs.
