Why this petition matters
Started by George Sila
Kenya generates about 3,000 tons of e-waste annually from electronic devices. Without proper systems to dispose and recycle e-waste these items are often mixed with ordinary waste and end up at dumpsites and landfills where they become pollutants to soil, water and air (in instances where they are incinerated). As a result of hoading, more e-waste is held at our homes an one way or the other in due time it will find its way to the dumpsites.
Considering that a huge percentage of these electronics aren't manufactured in Kenya, the manufacturers should be responsible for the waste generated from their products.
My petition aims to:
- Move to introduce a levy which covers the cost of e-waste management. This entails recycling where possible, as well as collection and shipment of waste to their of places of origin for management.
- Ensure manufacturers are committed to clean and environmentally safe production. A move to ban lead, mercury (Heavy Metals), flame retardants and certain phthalate on products imported to the country.
- Set a government’s age limit policy to restricts importation of old electronics into the country to prevent digital dumping in Kenya.
