Create the world’s first, city-scale, green public transport system
Why this petition matters
15% of Australians use GreenPower* for their home. (and an extra 30% of Australians homes have solar panels)
GreenPower* - clean electricity generated from solar/wind/etc., delivered via the grid, costs about 4.5 cents extra per kWh or about 15% more than dirty electricity. It’s an offset system.
Why can’t we use GreenPower for other things – like train trips?
I estimate that it would cost less than 10 cents extra to have a GreenPowered train trip instead of a dirty powered train trip.
Sydney Trains has an Opal card system. It would be easy to change the Opal card website to allow train users to select to use GreenPower for their train trips. Sydney trains would then purchase sufficient GreenPower to cover the share of the electricity used by the GreenPower users.
We could create the world’s first, city-scale, green public transport system for only an extra 10 cents per train trip!
And that’s just the start … electricity is used for many other products and services.
We are all energy consumers and we are the ones who ultimately are paying for it, so why can’t we be allowed to choose to use clean, green electricity. (Imagine trying to force a vegan to eat meat!)
Please help save the world one train trip at a time.
