George Broadfoot started this petition to Sydney Catchment Authority and

Subsidence from longwall coal mining has significantly damaged the Illawarra catchment area. The water security of future generations has been compromised for profit from metallurgical coal extraction.

I would like the companies that profit from this extraction to pay an ongoing water bill for water lost due to subsidence. The Sydney Catchment Authority has the following objectives:

-to manage and protect the catchment area and catchment infrastructure to promote water quality
-to protect public health and safety, and the environment
-to ensure that the water it supplies is of appropriate quality
-to operate according to the principles of ecologically sustainable development
-to efficiently and economically manage catchment infrastructure works

It is hard to fathom why our governing bodies have put the water security of this region in jeopardy for the short-term profit of South32 and other companies. These companies must receive a water bill similar to a domestic household for every litre of water lost due to subsidence.

This billing event may help the community understand what has occurred to the geology of the catchment area due to undermining. The  destructive mining occurring under the catchment must cease as we progress towards a sustainable future.
