UC Berkeley University Village Free Shuttle

This petition is to request the removal of the $1.50 one way fee for the Richmond Field Station Shuttle which stops at Jackson and Buchanan and travels to minors circle.

Cal student parents and families juggle complex family schedules. The greater distance between family housing and campus than that of its single housing counterparts adds to this juggling act. Pregnant mothers often find standing room only during the 45 min packed AC transit bus ride to campus. At the same time the Richmond field station shuttle travels an almost identical route with less stops, more comfortable seating and virtually non-existent ridership. Why is this shuttle so empty?

The $1.50 fee is unsustainable for the majority of undergraduate and graduate incomes and over the course of the semester reaches a cost similar to a campus parking pass. The recent construction at Jackson and Monroe has breached its contract and left the AC transit bus pads severely damaged. This means that pregnant mothers, parents walking small toddlers in hand and other student parents and families must walk 3 extra blocks through what one resident dubbed "The tunnel" of streets with homeless and RV residents, abandoned furniture, trash, broken bottles and needles. Free access to this shuttle would also allow on campus students to more easily access the Gill Tract Farm which serves students basic needs such as free access to organic produce and theraputic and restorative activities.

We ask that students parents and students with families be treated fairly in comparison with single students who are provided free perimeter shuttles and campus adjacent housing. We ask that the $1.50 one way Richmond Field Station Shuttle be waived.
