Halim Slaton started this petition to SWGA Officials and

I realized we don't really recycle in (SW) Georgia like the rest of the world. I want to attempt to improve that. Recycling shouldn't feel like an inconvenience, but it does here. That's not right. Let's work together and try to fix that. We should be excited and proud to try and help recycle when possible.

I would like to either have the option for every home (or at the very least, businesses) to have access to the blue recycling bins outside for pickup, OR more recycling facilities around in public areas/convenient locations.

I believe the blue bins are really the way to go but realize the cost will always be the most daunting part of accepting it in every city. But can't we try? It's becoming a standard in a lot of cities, and we shouldn't fall behind everyone else. In some places it is even illegal not to recycle, how bizarre!

There are two attached articles that are very informative and even a little frightening. One essentially explains that China was our (U.S.A.) go to for recycled good for quite a while, and then tells of how they pulled the plug a few years ago for importing foreign recyclables due to the negative effects it was having there. A few others, India (etc.) tried to pick up the slack for imports, but just can’t do it in such ways as China did. Now, literally the entire world is a bit lost for what to do with their recycling. Many are burning or burying it, while others still try and ship it overseas to handle it. How long will this last? The other article gets into details about how our States are individually being affected by China’s ban on recycling imports.

We shouldn’t just remain silent and let this slowly become/stay the norm. I believe if enough people are willing to put in the effort, we can at least start programs in SWGA to help remind people that all recycling efforts are noticed and appreciated.

We cannot fix the recycling problems our whole world is facing, but we can slow down the negative effects that not recycling at all causes. Landfills and trash burning are not something we should warmly welcome into our lives. Even if our generation doesn’t notice the immediate effects, it doesn’t take much research to find that it will be a bigger problem than we can deal with one day. Starting recycling programs in SWGA would be a good start to a healthier world and lifestyle for all of us. Let’s start simple with things we all use and dispose regularly; cans, plastics, and cardboard. If that goes well, we can shoot for more items; glass and so much more.

If we get enough signatures, I will personally go to Albany, Leesburg, Americus, and Cordele’s city council and present them our signatures for change and this case for recycling improvement. One new business owner can’t do much, but with five or ten thousand signatures backing the cause I bet we can make someone notice us!

Let’s (try to) do this!
