SYHS Student started this petition to Sweetwater Union High School District and

San Ysidro High School has not made clear their dress code guidelines. Teachers and staff have dress coded to their own discretion what they deem inappropriate. We asked San Ysidro High School to implement a dress code that does not discriminate against girls and does allow them to wear whatever makes them comfortable and safe; from looking at the dress code from 2019-2020 school year, we are advocating for the creation of a brand new dress code that does not ban spaghetti straps, shirts that show the midriff and navel. In addition to this, we would like to have a voice when deciding on a new dress code. We realize we have a new principal. and we do not blame her for what we see as a misuse of a dress code. We actually hope to cooperate with her to ensure a dress code makes everyone live the best high school experience without any disruptions caused by their outfit.

A girl's outfit should never interfere with her education. A public school should do the public service of educating and have no part in deciding a girl's modesty. Policing a girl's outfit for reasons other than gang involvement, inappropriate symbols, or any discriminatory sayings implies the sexualization of underage girls in dress codes. Students should be able to dress comfortably when they go to school, an environment they should feel safe in. Dress coding creates a feeling of unnecessary embarrassment, fear, and conformity.
