We are calling on Sway Parish Council to buy the Amenity Land in Gilpin Hill, Rhiners Close and Kitcher's Close

Background-The original plans for Gilpin Hill, Rhiners Close and Kitchers Close intended the verges to be a public space. This was prevented by the death of the owner.

The Crown Estate took over this land and have offered to sell Sway Parish Council the amenity land in Gilpin Hill, Rhiners Close and Kitichers for a peppercorn cost of £1.

The land in question covers many of the grass verges of Gilpin Hill. These green areas make the road a pleasant place to live and a nice street to walk down.

The Benefits of Buying the Land:

·       Buying the land would put the parish council and local residents in control of what happens to it.

·       These green spaces could be enhanced with new native planting, creating spaces for wildlife and public use.

·        Protecting these spaces would ensure that Sway remains a green and pleasant place to live.

The Risk of Inaction

Failing to buy the land would create numerous problems:

·       The Crown Estate have said they don’t want to split up the land and want to sell it to an organisation.

·       Ambiguity over the control of this land is bad for Sway as a whole. Already, one resident has tried to incorporate land into their plot by planting a leylandii  hedge which birds cannot nest in.

·       If the council doesn’t buy the land, then further encroachments on the green spaces of Sway could follow—setting a dangerous precedent.

It is therefore vital that Sway residents show their support for these proposals.

Next Steps

The council has investigated buying the land and will decide on whether to take this forward to the next stage at the April meeting. If you support the plan, please write to your Parish Council using this email address: clerk@sway-pc.gov.uk

The cost of taking these plans forward to the next stage is only £750. Local residents are even prepared to help the council meet some of these cost.

Once this next stage of work has been done, the total cost of legal fees involved in purchasing the land will then be known, but it likely to be a very small proportion of the council’s overall budget.
