Last chance to have your say on the ”Our Place” project. If you think that the Swan Hill Rural City Council should reject Option 1 (Pioneer Settlement) and Option 2 (Spoons) and consider new sites for the Murray River Cultural Centre, please call and email your Councillors today. https://www.swanhill.vic.gov.au/about/council/mayor-councillors/
A modern precinct for creativity and culture built in a prominent and accessible central Murray River location would be a wonderful thing for the Swan Hill region. Just put it in the right place!
The Swan Hill Rural City Council is planning to make a decision on Tuesday 7th of July, 2020 to construct the modern “Our Place” building either within the Pioneer Settlement grounds, Option 1, or just outside, demolishing and rebuilding Spoons, Option 2. Neither has broad community support and both involve reducing and interrupting the function of proper facilities.
If you think that the Council should be considering new sites for the project, please sign and share this petition, then call and email your Councillors. Ask them to reject Option 1 and Option 2 and consider a new location.
The Murray River Cultural Centre was first proposed for the old wharf site, north of the Swan Hill bridge. There are a number of potential River Precinct sites. Wouldn’t it be amazing to have the Murray River Interpretative Centre, as conceived originally by the local Aboriginal community and a new Swan Hill Art gallery built on an accessible and prominent site in the central river precinct? The current “Our Place” plan only allows a tiny portion for the cultural component. This does not seem respectful. It is not in the spirit of the original concept.
This could be a centre for creativity, innovation and celebration; a place of art, culture and ecology, used and embraced by the community. Space for art, workshops and gatherings. It would be accessible for young people. It could be a place that truly enables the ”Story of the Murray to be told through the eyes of Traditional Land Owners,” as described in the Riverfront Masterplan 2013
https://www.swanhill.vic.gov.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/UD-R-06-Masterplan-Report-Rev-4-1.pdf Pages 104 and 134. It could educate locals and visitors about the region and create greater understanding and encourage visitation. It would affirm the deeply significant and primary place of First Nations people of the region
