Michael Rolfe started this petition to Swale Borough Council (Planning)

Current planning consultation has been complex and not user friendly for the average resident, people have little time in their busy lives to follow local plans that will affect their lives exponentially.  Many remote decisions have been made without the benefit of wider consideration or consultation that is now causing unease and discontent in the local communities of Swale.  This includes planning approval of applications that vary from the local plan.  Whilst legally Swale Borough Council has followed procedures in relation to consultation with residents, as more and more developments take place people are becoming extremely uneasy, anxious and upset about the true extent of the building plan.

Residents accept that housing and change is needed, however more often than not large scale housing developments are being built on the green belt or agricultural land in preference to brown field sites that should be prioritised first.  Infrastructure and services cannot cope with the current population with regular 'bad' news stories identifying severe shortfalls in access to healthcare, social care, social housing, transport and employment.  The prospects for those setting out in work or seeking work remain bleak with low wage or zero hours contract work becoming the norm.

The local plan needs to consider more carefully the impact morally, environmentally and socially for those living in the area with current developers offering little or no housing that suits the existing population living in the location such as affordable housing or social housing.  As a result this petition aims to gain the support of a sufficient number os Swale residents to force the council to reopen consultation on all existing development plans.  Once reopened we demand that the Council be more transparent and engaging in their production of any plan so that local residents can have a renewed opportunity to be fully engaged and involved in determining how the future of their communities will look.
