In recent years a harmful change has occurred to the suburb of Sylvania Waters. Since the opening of Box Road, traffic conditions in Sylvania Waters have deteriorated to a state of disaster and stands as a potential health risk to all resident of Sylvania Waters. Originally, with the closure of cross traffic through Box Road, the only drivers through Sylvania Waters were those accessing the homes within the waters. Since opening Box Road, a significant number of travellers cross through Sylvania Waters to access the surrounding suburbs - thus saving time in their daily commute.

This has resulted in generally bumper-bumper traffic congestion between the hours of 4pm – 7pm Monday to Friday spanning from the Belgrave Esplanade & Holt Road intersection, to the Box road & Port Hacking Road intersection. The traffic congestion has not only reduced the median sale price of houses in Sylvania Waters, but stands as a safety hazard for children and families walking on Belgrave Esplanade, and crossing the road. Most concerning, as this is the only road which provides access to Sylvania Waters, in the case of a medical emergency, our medical services would be unable to reach the patient, with a delay of minimum 10 minutes.
The median age for Sylvania Waters alone is 41 years old, 40% of the owners in Sylvania Waters alone are over the age of 50. [DN1] If anytime between these hours a resident of this area where to suffer from a heart attack, a stroke, an anaphylactic attack or any other time critical acute illness an ambulance would almost be unable to arrive at any of the affected locations.
Additionally, Belgrave Esplanade sees a number of businesses including a child care centre, the lives of the attendees, as well as the elderly and handicapped residents are threatened. As a resident of Sylvania Waters, I have witnessed driver’s frustrated with the traffic congestion drive recklessly and dangerously, as well as a high number of drivers not paying attention to the changing traffic conditions (generally distracted on their phone), which thus may lead to a fatality or injury.

As owners in Sylvania Waters, we are appalled by our local government representatives and members of parliament for allowing the health and safety of the residents of Sylvania Waters to remain at risk without addressing it. We demand that the traffic condition in Belgrave Esplanade be reviewed IMMEDIATELY, with consideration of closing access to Box Road, as originally designed during the development of Sylvania Waters.
