Save Sutherland Shire's oldest house.

The cottage at 5 Evelyn St North, known as 'Gunyah', is reported to be the oldest house in the Sutherland Shire. It was built c.1870, and is the only existing part of the Thomas Holt Sutherland Estate which covered a vast expanse around Gwawley Bay including Australia's first oyster farms. Furthermore, it represents a building style which is very uncommon in the area now.
Sutherland Shire Council bought the property and heritage listed it more than a decade ago, with the purpose of restoration. Since that time, council has let it slip into a state of disrepair and is now choosing to de-list the house against the advice of its own council officers and the independent state government review of its draft LEP. This is purely a financially-based decision to get a higher price for the land once they demolish the building.
We urge Sutherland Council to reconsider this foolish decision, and preserve this historic cottage for future generations to enjoy. The cottage should be restored or leased as a museum. If they do not act the cottage will be de-listed, demolished, and sold as a vacant block of land, and this vital link to early European settlement lost.
