Put sustainability and implementation of bike lanes on the agenda

With local elections around the corner, it's time to see if any of our local members are brave enough to put sustainability and the implementation of bike lanes on the agenda.

As a local resident and mum to two young boys, the fact that I cannot take my children cycling safely in Cronulla demands attention. Please sign this petition if you care about the environment, health, reduction of congestion or sustainable transport. I think we need to take the emotion out of the debate and focus on a solution that works for the majority.

Where I live, we have to cycle through the busy streets of the suburb for about 6km before we join up with a cycleway that is on a highway. I am a "cyclist", pedestrian and driver and would like to know that my children and I are being "looked after" no matter the mode of transport we choose to use. It would be great if all councils could work collaboratively to develop a master plan that allowed cyclists, pedestrians and drivers to do their thing safely and all over Sydney.

The restrictions put in place by Sutherland Council on the Esplanade are outdated and lacking in imagination. This is the same council that has approved the Sharkie development which will only add to congestion woes during summer.

All the most sophisticated cities in the world promote sustainable transport AND develop infrastructure that includes attractive places to cycle. I am so envious when I hear about the initiatives put in place in Queensland, where councilors have embraced urban biking. Encouraging people to ride attracts tourists and new residents who enjoy the lifestyle benefits of letting their legs do the driving.
