More than half of Australia’s carbon emissions come from just ten companies:

1. AGL - 43.1 million tonnes

2. Energy Australia - 21.7 million tonnes

3. Stanwell Corporation - 18.4 million tonnes

4. Origin Energy - 18.1 million tonnes

5. CS Energy - 14.7 million tonnes

6. Chevron Australia - 12 million tonnes

7. Pioneer Sail Holdings - 11.3 million tonnes

8. OZGen Holdings - 11 million tonnes

9. Woodside Petroleum - 10 million tonnes

10. NRG Victoria - 8.5 million tonnes

These companies are making a profit at the expense of future generations, and even today’s population as climate change is affecting us now.

There is an opportunity reduce Australia's contribution to atmospheric carbon levels by more than half by holding these top 10 emitters of carbon accountable for the harm they are causing and requiring that they go carbon neutral (or net zero) within 2 financial years. Going carbon neutral involves reducing carbon emissions as much as possible, and then off-setting the remaining emissions by investing in projects that take remove carbon from the atmosphere, or avoid carbon being released into the atmosphere (such as renewables).

By investing in renewables and carbon sequestration projects, both within Australia and overseas, not only will these companies be helping Australia move into the carbon-free era, but they will also be setting themselves up for that carbon-free era, investing in renewable assets that they can own and power Australia with.

There are many ways their investment can help. As an example, beyond renewables and reforestation, here is a project by the name of Carbon8 (https://carbon8.raisely.com/) which aims to get carbon levels within the soil from 1% to 8%, making the ground much more able to withstand a drought and able to hold more water during a flood (key events caused by climate change, and affecting Australia now). A significant investment from these top 10 emitters could help prevent devastation among our farming and outback communities all whilst taking carbon out of the atmosphere.

We have known about climate change for 30 years, and these companies have had ample time to move their business models to carbon-free. We are now running out of time and we need to address climate change with urgency, before the consequences become significant and devastating. The solutions exist, we just need to hold the companies creating carbon emissions accountable for the harm they are causing. These companies have a moral imperative to fully take into consideration the cost of their operations, and they can do so by become certified under the National Carbon Offset Standard (https://www.environment.gov.au/climate-change/government/carbon-neutral/ncos
