Approve PrEP Downunder
HIV Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is the use of medication to avoid HIV.
In scientific trials testing PrEP's effectiveness there have been no HIV diagnoses. If taken as prescribed, PrEP blocks the risk of acquiring HIV.
Research released at a recent conference in Seattle overwhelmingly confirms that PrEP works.
As an HIV prevention strategy, PrEP is not a replacement for condoms. Instead it is a strategy for people who cannot consistently use condoms and who want to avoid HIV.
The American government recognised PrEP's effectiveness and approved its use in the USA in July 2012.
The Australian Government recognised PrEP as an effective HIV prevention strategy in the recently launched 7th National HIV Strategy 2014 - 2017.
Despite this recognition, PrEP has not been approved for use in Australia. VAC calls on the Minister to do everything within her power to expedite the approval of PrEP in Australia.
Please show your support for the prevention of HIV by signing the online petition to show the Government just how many people support the approval of PrEP.
We encourage you to:
