Why this petition matters

On May 16th, a lacrosse player from Lake Catholic High School in Mentor, Ohio took the field in a game against Orange High School (a school representing a large Jewish population) with a swastika on his leg.

After an internal investigation, the school deemed the incident to be a report of a prank where a senior on the team drew a swastika on his hand and "stamped" the given player with the symbol "unknowingly." While the part time coaches of the team resigned, no full time staff members were punished and outside of a delayed graduation for the "senior in question" the team is taking a trip to the Holocaust Museum.

The community is outraged by the apparent cover up as it seems highly unlikely someone wouldn't notice being touched on the calf and leaving such a symbol on their own body. Further, Lake Catholic has a reputation of poor behavior at athletic events and the student with the swastika on his calf was NOT described to be a young man of good character by his now former coach.

Lake Catholic is one of the lowest performing lacrosse programs in the state and the poor play on the field has resulted in a culture of bad behavior on the field to compensate for the lack of wins. A year off from lacrosse will due the institution well to rebuild the program and let the school know that this level of hate and irresponsible investigation will not be tolerated.
