Please demand that Border Patrol and ICE suspend immigration checkpoints in South Texas during Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath.
With 130 mile-per-hour winds and ten-foot storm surges, a category 4 hurricane can kill people. Catastrophic flooding will leave tens of thousands of people stranded without shelter. Everyone in the storm's shadow should be able to flee to safety. Undocumented immigrants should not have to chose between arrest and drowning, between deportation and death.
In the history of America, the Border Control has never before kept checkpoints open during natural disasters. Let us preserve our humanity in the face of this storm and all the storms faced by our nation.
Checkpoints and immigration enforcement operations in South Texas must be suspended. Don't allow Harvey to take even one life that could have been saved by your compassion.
