Reduce sugar and junk fats in school meals

With the introduction of free school meals for all infant school children in reception, year 1 and year 2, on the basis that children all children should be given a nutritious lunch, why are our children being given disproportionately large, sugary puddings? Sticky toffee, chocolate puddings etc, are served in large portions, every lunchtime, setting up unhealthy eating patterns and an addiction from an early age to sugar and trans fats.es
Eden Foodservices, for example, who provide school meals in Brighton, are committed to 'delivering a faultless catering service with an emphasis on improving the health and wellbeing of children' yet at age four, the puddings are huge, the nutritional value questionable.
Then, at secondary school, children are offered salty snacks, pizza, chips etc from break time onwards. How is this either serving to create healthy habits in our children or promote energy for learning?
As parents, we have the choice to send our kids in with packed lunches, but shouldn't schools be leading the way in educating our children holistically, leading by example, forging change and encouraging our children to make conscious choices in what they eat?
