GOVERNMENT OF INDIA, DO NOT INCLUDE HINDI IN PASSPORTS

The External Affairs Minister, Ms. Sushma Swaraj, announced that the personal particulars page of Indian passports will be in Hindi and English going forward. Please refer to the following URL: Personal Particulars in Indian Passports To Be Documented in English & Hindi

This tantamounts to the imposition of Hindi on the non-Hindi speaking population of India. How will a non-Hindi speaker verify the accuracy of his / her personal details in the passport? You may argue that this challenge currently exists as those Indians who do not know English cannot verify the accuracy of their passports. The inclusion of Hindi only compounds the issue. English is an international and national link language.

The following incidents prove that  the imposition of Hindi on non-Hindi speakers has intensified in recent years

1] The replacement of Planning Commission with an organisation called NITI Aayog. NITI stands for National Institution For Transforming India. Aayog is the Hindi word for commission. How about adopting an organisation name understood by non-Hindi speakers too?

2] Requiring those bureaucrats in the Central government who know Hindi to make announcements in Hindi and English, and

3] The current move to document personal particulars in Indian passports in Hindi and in English

Mr. Modi & Ms. Swaraj, India faces several socio-economic and political challenges at the current juncture. We need to remain united as a country to overcome these challenges. Please refrain from using divisive tactics like language imposition. Our energies as a nation will be better utilised in promoting the greater common good.
