Restore Student Access to Bathrooms
Restore Student Access to Bathrooms
I am writing this letter with a request in regards to the physical building of John O'Connell High School. I ask that you please open up the boys restroom located on the second floor and the girls bathroom located on the third floor. As of now, the only girls and boys restroom that is opened to students is the one located on the first floor. However, it has come to my attention that students are dissatisfied with the cleanliness and inconvenience of this restroom.
Every day, I hear students around the O’Connell community criticize the bathrooms. They do not appreciate having to wait a long time to simply use the restroom. When they are finally able to, they find it being a mess, and unhygienic to use. According to the survey conducted at our school around three fourths of John O'Connell students surveyed said they have avoided using the bathroom due to it being unclean. The uncleanliness at OC is impacting students daily usage of the restrooms. Students should not have to worry about deciding whether or not they can use the bathroom just because they are not functioning or if they have a foul odor and if they are consistently being a mess.
After a long day at John O'Connell hundreds of students use the utilities which can cause the bathrooms to have little to no paper towels, low in soap and toilet paper . This is due to the low maintenance that cannot be improved because of janitorial reasons. In order to overcome these issues having another bathroom will improve the usage on the first floor .Less students will be using the first floor restroom ,which will subsequently improve its maintenance .Although another concern may be safety issues, as a student at John O'Connell I have never encountered a safety issue occurring in our restrooms ,and it has become very unlikely over the years .John O'Connell is a school dedicated to making things positive, when an issue has been encountered ,they inform students about the consequences. After the penalties are addressed, students learn not to commit the actions again .Simply adding any restroom can cause concerns ,whether it is located in a school or other public places ,there is always a problem that can be encountered. But by adding a new bathroom it can eliminate students concerns and improve students hygiene around our school.
Attending a school with hundreds of classmates, exposes us towards a high level of bacteria and germs. There needs to be preventative measures so that students can attend a cleaner school . The Arizona Department of Health Services conducted an investigation in the states top three upscale districts and found that there was “urine on many surfaces which can increase bacteria and virus. This has the potential of spreading e-coli,hepatitis A ,and other diseases’’ (Kaivac.com,Breaking the cycle of restroom neglect). Since our school only has the first floor bathroom accessible, it becomes easier for students to be exposed to higher levels of bacteria and viruses . As a result, the bacteria found within the first floor bathroom can spread onto school hallways, exposing students at a higher to risk of getting ill.If a student happens to contract one of these viruses they are more likely to miss school and become delayed on class work .When their grades lower and earn a low GPA the culprit to blame behind the mess was is in the bathrooms.
Aside from understanding the health effects towards having only one bathroom accessible, opening up the third and second floor bathroom will facilitate to students emergencies. Oftentimes, students both girls and boys are in positions where they can not make it to the first floor bathroom because of its distance. Whether someone might need to go to the bathroom for personal reasons or for smaller incidents like bloody noses, it is important that us students have the accessibility to a bathroom.
Now that you have read the importance of opening up the rest of the school bathroom I hope that you understand that the John O’ Connell community will greatly appreciate it. Not only will personal hygiene improve, but in case of any emergencies students will have access to the third and second floor bathroom. While there are many drawbacks in opening these bathrooms, it is important that you understand the benefits in taking such action. Therefore, it would be greatly appreciated if you reconsidered our access to the student bathrooms.
