Equal Opportunities for Cullman City East and West Elementary Students in Cullman, Alabama

We, the parents/students/teachers/family/friends of current or future students of Cullman City Schools, are concerned about vast inequalities that exist in our two elementary schools--East Cullman and West Cullman Elementary. Opportunities for field trips, extracurricular activities, and school activities are vastly different at the two schools. Examples include the opportunity for students at East Elementary to visit the Alabama Capitol in Montgomery, attend Space Camp for an entire week, visit Washington DC, and be part of a competitive archery team, 4-H club, parent picnics, and other school activities. Many of these same field trips and opportunities are not offered to West Elementary students, despite being part of the same school district. We feel that our students are all Cullman Bearcats and they ALL deserve the same opportunities at the elementary school level. We would like to see changes made to offer the same opportunities for field trips, extracurricular activities, and other school clubs to students at both East Cullman and West Cullman Elementary Schools. As part of a long-range plan for instilling equality into our students' educational paths as well as maintaining friendships formed in grades K-1 at Cullman City Primary School, a majority of parents feel that keeping our students together for grades K-12, rather than splitting them into two schools for elementary grades is preferred. This can be accomplished either by assigning a few grades to each of the two existing elementary schools or by constructing a new building to house all of the elementary students under one roof. The equal opportunity to all Cullman City School students as well as the continuation of friendships developed at Cullman City Primary School are our main concerns and reasons for signing/supporting this petition.
