APA - urgently evaluate and take official position on Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) programs.
The National Security Council, Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, National Counterterrorism Center, FBI and other federal agencies are recruiting psychologists for their highly contentious and controversial CVE programs. While ostensibly aimed at preventing radicalization, some argue that the theories that underlie these programs have been empirically discredited and are paramount to spying on patients under the pretext of national security. Moreover, it raises at least two potential issues for psychologists wishing to participate in such programs – ethical concerns of patient privacy and providing an intervention that lacks empirical support.
We, the signatories to this petition, request that the APA take urgent and immediate action to critically evaluate the type, nature, and scientific validity of current CVE programs. We also implore the APA to concurrently evaluate the data that suggests that CVE programs are misguided, empirically unsound, and ethically problematic for psychologists to engage in. In effect, we request an urgent and thorough review of all perspectives as they relate to CVE programs and as they relate to the professional field of psychology. To avoid this becoming the next Hoffman Report, we request an immediate, inclusive, comprehensive, and transparent review with a subsequent informed, official position being made by the APA.
