Stop police corruption in Anderson, Indiana

The Anderson Police Department in Anderson, Indiana has a deep-seated reputation as a hotbed of corruption. "The Little Mafia", "Criminal Policing" and "Incestuous Investigators" are a few well-known terms used to describe the department statewide. The sad truth is that the vast majority of the APD officers are wonderful people, who work tirelessly every day to maintain law and order in an economically devastated town. The few bad apples should be held accountable for their actions. To date, criminal cops are destroying the system, and the lives of those they go after when they fear being exposed.

My wife, Kelli Jack-Kelly, was one of those people victimized. She has never hurt anyone, and never been in trouble a day in her life. A native of the city, she went on to get her bachelors degree in Political Science and History from Indiana University, and an MBA from Ball State. She served as VP of Marketing and Public Relations at an Anderson bank, and then moved on to media and broadcasting. She is the founder and president of a small public relations and media firm, an on-air personality for radio and television, and owner of an organic specialty bakery. Not only does she serve on several area boards, but is very active in our church, and is a graduate of the Stanley K. Lacy Leadership Series in Indianapolis. A former Miss Indiana, Kelli moved from her hometown of Anderson more than 25 years ago, to Indianapolis. Anderson even named a day after her "Kelli Jack Day", and gave her the key to the city.

In 2005, she started investigating the APD after several people contacted her complaining of the corruption. In 2006, the Mayor of Anderson, Kevin Smith, contacted her family and asked that she back off because she was making the city "look bad". The behavior she was investigating appeared to get better, so she decided to step back, but keep an eye on them. Then in 2010, a rogue brother-in-law in an attempt to get his hands on my family's money, filed a police report with false information with a buddy of his who was a police detective. The detective told us outright that they were friends, and that they would not be investigating our claims of fraud against the family member. On April 15, 2014, 6 police officers followed my wife home, arrested her, and charged her with 12 felony counts of fraud. Not a single one was true, and some of the businesses had been closed for decades. These trumped up charges, along with missing evidence that we provided exonerating her, are just a few of the corrupt practices of this division. They listed her father and aunt as victims, but never interviewed her father, and her aunt told them it was not true. They ignored that. APD never interviewed my wife. However, they did threaten her unless she backed off of her story.

When they realized they had nothing, they dropped all 12 felony counts. Because they threatened to come after me, and start this nightmare all over again, she decided to plead guilty to one misdemeanor count. Her father's health was failing because of their corruption, and her aunt was in hospice, still upset daily about the lies of the police. Others have been bullied in other ways. Just in the last 48 hours, the news has covered 3 instances of corruption at APD. Destroying and altering evidence, cover ups, and failure to investigate... in just 3 days. The list goes on and on. They are frequently sued, and have recently refused to wear body cameras that may keep them in line. They obviously do not want to be held accountable.

Signing this petition will help us do 3 things: 1.) Have police wear body cameras, 2.) Blow the whistle on those that practice corruption, and 3.) Harshly punish those officers that are caught breaking the law. My wife is in the process of setting up a Citizen's Oversight Committee to help the process along. Your signature will show your support for this as well, and ensure this will not happen to anyone else. Who will cover those meetings for the media? My wife. Who will not stop until the corruption with APD stops? Hopefully, you will.
